The Ugandan Quidditch Movement

In Uganda, an unlikely sport is driving social change. That sport is quidditch. After a chance encounter with a Harry Potter novel, a dedicated teacher brings the magic world of chasers, beaters, seekers, quaffles, bludgers and the golden snitch to the students at Good Shepherd Primary School in Katwadde Village. As they train for an upcoming tournament, the quidditch community they create helps the kids smash taboos about gender, learn teamwork and overcome poverty.

Planetwalker

In 1971, John Francis (Mountainfilm 2008) witnessed an oil tanker collision in the San Francisco Bay. The sight of oiled birds on the shoreline caused him to give up motorized transport and speaking, convinced that listening was the way forward. He spent the next 17 silent years earning the name Planetwalker. Over the many miles, his idea of environmentalism was changed by the people he met and broke bread with. At 77 years old, Francis now both talks and rides in cars. Planetwalker recounts much of his internal journey and explores the weblike and sometimes deeply personal consequences of his decades of pilgrimage.
Planetwalker was formerly titled A Symphony of Tiny Lights.

On a dry lakebed in California, a group of friends attempt to build a scale model of time: a true illustration of cosmic evolution and our place within it. No longer a survival adaptation, this tendency, turbocharged by the speed and ease of online shopping, now results in closets full of cheap, fast fashion, the making of which exploits workers and harms the planet, and most of which quickly ends up in a landfill. The Shit-thropocene is a wacky and darkly funny look at how we got here and asks if there is a better way to fill the modern-day hole in our caveman hearts than by buying shitty products.

In 2005 after graduating high school, Maggie Doyne embarked on a gap year, where she met Tope, a now grown Nepalese orphan, caring for orphaned children. United in purpose, Maggie and Tope pooled resources to establish a children’s home, women’s empowerment program, and school in Nepal. Years later, their relentless efforts led to being honored as the 2015 CNN HERO OF THE YEAR. But days after the award ceremony, Maggie, by then guardian to over fifty Nepalese children, faces an unimaginable loss, plunging the family into disbelief and despair. After a chance encounter amidst her grief, Maggie allows a filmmaker into her life to document herself, her family, and soon enough, their falling in love. “Between the Mountain and the Sky” explores resilience, love’s impact in loss, and a family’s enduring strength to find hope in the darkest times.
